Carl Byington is a Georgia-based (Greater Atlanta area) CEO and entrepreneur who draws upon nearly three decades of experience to provide consultation services in the design of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) and Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) systems through his company, PHM Design, LLC. Prior to which, he worked for six years as PHM Analytics and CBM+ Lead at Sikorsky Aircraft. Carl led several multi-million dollar United States Air Force (USAF) program awards and served as the Chief Engineer on systems to interpret aircraft data, detect degradation, predict issues, and optimize maintenance planning.

Carl Byington spent the prior decade as an Owner and Director of Systems Engineering at Impact Technologies, LLC, in Rochester, NY. He developed PHM solutions for aircraft, shipboard, and land-based applications for industry and various military branches. Over his years at Impact, he served as Principal Investigator on more than 70 Phase I, II, and III programs. Specializing in advanced diagnostics and prognostics solutions for air vehicles, his work led to successful transitions on F-35 fighter jets, H-60 helicopters, and several unmanned vehicles.

Mr. Byington also served as Department Head of the Condition-based Maintenance Department at Penn State Applied Research Laboratory, and as Research Engineer in Power and Mechanical Systems Department. Prior to that he was a Rocket Scientist at NASA Langley Research Center.  Carl has maintained membership with many professional societies and conference organizations throughout his career, most notably the Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) Society and Society for Machinery Failure Prevention Technology (MFPT) in recent times.

Carl holds a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from George Washington University NASA JIAFS (Joint Institute for the Advancement of Flight Sciences) program and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned the Francis G. Tatnall Prize for the Most Outstanding Senior Design Project, among several other scholastic honors.

Carl Byington balances both the business and technical sides of his career with being a father and mentor, frequent travel adventure pursuits, long-distance hiking and kayaking, occasional mountaineering trips, and guiding others in SCUBA diving. He has successfully completed marathons on all seven continents including Antarctica. He writes and publishes blogs about some of these adventures and other subjects that interest him.

He has a personal page and publications page as well.

Liberty first, science second, safety third. Maybe we can discuss that ethos and other ideas over wine sometime.
